Chapter One Theoretical Framework
Speech communication is a purposeful activity, in which people often saysomething indirectly and implicitly in order to mean more than what is literally said. Inorder to achieve the communicative purpose, the hearer must work out the speaker’sintended meaning, that is, implicature, which was a notion first proposed by H. P.Grice, an American linguistic philosopher, who also made a distinction between whathe called natural meaning and non-natural meaning, on which Grice’s theory ofconversational implicature was based.
1.1 Meaning—Natural Meaning and Non-natural Meaning
The conversational implicature cannot be worked out without taking the basicmeaning of an utterance into consideration. It is the meaning that is to be translated inthe translation process within specific context. Meaning is a focus in the field ofpragmatic analysis and the essence of both Pragmatics and Translation. Therefore, it isimportant to know more about “meaning”, which makes a great contribution tounderstand comprehensively and thoroughly the notion of Cooperative Principle andthe Theory of Conversational Implicature.Linguistic courses have already taught us and we also have personally experiencedin our daily verbal communication that, quite frequently “what the speaker means byutterance U is not necessarily and closely related to the literal meaning of utterance Uat all” (Levinson, 1983). Quite often the speaker says something, but he means morethan what is literally said, so the hearer cannot just depend on the utterance’s literalmeaning to understand the speaker’s real intention. Since 1957, Grice has alreadystarted to notice different types of meaning and different meanings of meaning in hispaper Meaning. Furthermore, he made a distinction between what he called naturalmeaning and non-natural meaning. In this part, the author will focus on introducing thetwo kinds of meaning. In the above example, the relationship between the rings of the bell and the fullbus is a non-natural one. The meaning is conveyed because of a conventional linkbetween the signal and the intended meaning. There is no natural reason why threerings instead of four or five rings should convey this meaning. The times of rings ofthe bus can be once or twice or three. People simply accept the three rings of bell as asignal for saying it is a full bus. Grice terms this a “non-natural meaning”, and hisopinion is that most of language is concerned about this special type of meaning.Grice’s theory of non-natural meaning is actually a theory of communication. Thesignificance of the strict distinction between non-natural meaning and natural meaningby Grice is to analyze deeply the meaning of an utterance in speech communication orthe contents of the informative communication by applying non-natural meaning.https://www.51lunwen.org/yyfy/org201211061154187177.htmlNon-natural meaning includes the word meaning and the implicature. The implicatureis made up of conventional and non-conventional implicature, in which the latter isGrice’s focus of study. Non-conventional implicature has two subclasses, that is,non-conversational implicature and conversational implicature. The conversationalimplicature, to which Grice pays more attention, consists of generalized conversationalimplicature and particularized conversational implicature.
